Low Self-Esteem

The signs of low self-esteem may vary considerably from one child to the next and even from one situation to the next. Children especially experience low self-esteem in situations in which they believe they are destined for failure.

Tough Issues

How to Talk with Your Kids

Raising a child is probably the most gratifying job any of us will ever have -- and one of the toughest. We live in an increasingly complex world that challenges us every day with a wide range of disturbing issues that are difficult for children to understand and for adults to explain. We believe this Web site can help by offering practical, concrete tips and techniques for talking easily and openly with young children ages 8 to 12 about some very tough issues: sex, HIV/AIDS, violence, drugs and alcohol.

Anxiety in Children

Anxiety in Children

Children who experience fear and anxiety will tell you how they feel, but only when they are not afraid of being embarrassed, humiliated or punished. Parents face special challenges because children with anxiety tend to be nervous, avoidant, annoying or exhausting. If you become frustrated and make these children feel bad, they stop being honest and start telling you that they are tired, sick, "fine" or just don't care. Children will demonstrate their anxiety in a number of ways. The younger a child, the less their ability to identify anxiety or fear. Behavioral expression is usually seen when a child feels fear and anxiety and cannot find relief.

Oppositional Defiant Disorder

A type of disruptive behavior disorder characterized by repeated defiance, hostility, disobedience, and negative behavior towards people in authority. Oppositional behavior and defiance can be normal for children and teenagers at various stages of development, but they become a concern when they are frequent and consistent.

Conduct Disorders

All kids misbehave sometimes, but behavior disorders go beyond mischief and rebellion. With behavior disorders, your child or teen has a pattern of hostile, aggressive, or disruptive behaviors for more than 6 months.

Warning signs can include:

  • Harming or threatening themselves, other people or pets
  • Damaging or destroying property
  • Lying or stealing
  • Not doing well in school, skipping school
  • Early smoking, drinking or drug use
  • Early sexual activity
  • Frequent tantrums and arguments
  • Consistent hostility towards authority figures
